Mortal Kombat Review - A Bloody Good Time

My time with Mortal Kombat has been nothing short of ass-kickingly awesome. From top to bottom, this is the fighting game Mortal Kombat fans have been waiting on since the game franchises' disastrous foray into 3D fighters. The game's story mode takes the Mortal Kombat story back it's roots. The game begins with the defeat of Earth Realms mightiest warriors and protectors at the hand of the Out world emperor. From there they do a clever Star Trek style reboot and mess with the space time continuum.

This reboot of Mortal Kombat includes a fairly full roster of MK alumni. It returns to the tournament from MK1, but there are some new faces to this tournament. Fans of the series will surely recognize cyborg characters Sektor and Cyrax, but will they recognize them as humans before their transformation? Seeing such well known characters in the first tournament, and before their final incarnations was a real treat. I've enjoyed my time with the story mode significantly, but nothing compares to the old school arcade mode. Choosing your favorite character and testing your might against the cpu opponents, a friend or even a stranger online is just as rewarding as it ever was.

I've never been a big fan of fighters, but for a few simple reasons Mortal Kombat has always been one of my favorite gaming franchises. Top to bottom, MK is its own game. There have been many copies and clones, but none ever so popular. The game has regained its sense of self. The combat is just as tight and over the top as ever. I worked my way through every character on the roster and although I have my favorites, I didn't find one that I couldn't at least play competently after a few rounds. Button mashing is no where near as rewarding as carefully timed attacks and parries, but it is possible for casual fighters.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - A Story About Volvo-Shitting Dragons

It's December 11th, 2010. I'm huddled up on my living room couch with a six pack and a tray of buffalo wings. On screen Neil Patrick Harris is doing his best to make his actions match the sound cues, which apparently went better in rehearsal. I'm watching the Spike Video Game Awards. The laughs are few and far between, the forced celebrity appearances are awkward, and my wings are soon going to become "too hot to handle" in a whole new way. Then out, of the haze of crappy award show, steps a man who is as a god to us mere gaming mortals. Todd Howard walks across the high tech VGA's stage to a chorus of hooded monks and thunderous orchestrated music. He tells us he's here to unveil Bethesda's newest project. I sputter a piece of half chewed buffalo wing into my beer and find myself on the edge of my seat. Fallout 3 stole hundreds of hours from my life. The Elder Scrolls series has taken up years collectively. I'm not saying this to complain of their addictive nature. Neigh! This is merely a fan boys testament to the complete and immersive worlds Bethesda creates. My mind is racing with possibilities and then the trailer begins.

Max Von Sydow's familiar and talented voice pours out of my surround sound and as he elaborates his narration the screen shows me a teaser that reveals... a carving. I hear key words as he speaks. He says things like "Oblivion," "Skyrim" and then he just balls out says "The Elder Scrolls." As I pick my jaw up off the floor I realize that the awards have been over for half an hour and I'm suffering from what could indeed become a priapism if not properly addressed. As the night rolls on I Google relentlessly, watch the trailer fifteen times and take the most painful shit I've ever experienced.

The release date presented to us was 11/11/11. This year, a new full Elder Scrolls title will be released. That leaves us almost a full year to research and masturbate over the details of this gaming giant with maniacal fervor. Let's take a look at what we know so far.

The Crow Remake Starts Filming Fall 2011 With 28 Days Later Director

I don't even really know what to write about this, so I'm mostly just going to provide you with the press release because it says all that needs to be said. My opinion, just a little bit of that, first, is that this is needless.

The original was a decent enough telling of the story, though still nowhere near as good as the original comic, and that the comic itself was never intended to have as many follow-up stories with other characters as it wound up having from being such a big hit.

That being said, what the fuck do we really need a new Crow movie for?

The press release is below.

Saturday Nightmares Returns To New Jersey

It seems like it has been entirely too long since New Jersey had itself an amazing and awesome horror convention. For years many of us have been wondering when we'd be getting something back towards the scale of the Monster-Mania and Chiller Theater conventions of old. Well, it looks like we've finally got a contender.

Originally at the Landmark Loew's in my hometown of Jersey City, NJ, the Saturday Nightmares convention in NJ is moving to a bigger location and has an even more impressive lineup.

Running from June 3rd through the 5th this year, at the Sheraton Meadowlands Hotel in East Rutherford, NJ, the show already has a boastful lineup of some classic names in horror and sci-fi, from The Birds and Dawn Of The Dead to the man responsible for the voice of Roger Rabbit. Fucking awesome! Check out the website at http://www.saturdaynightmares.com/ and look below for just a sampling of some of the guests to be expected at the show.
